Pomona -- August 11, 2019 - Part 1

Cleaning Up the Series I Jaguar XJS Instrument Cluster -- Cleaning the speedometer & reassembly -- Part 4

This plastic piece acts as the mounting bracket interface between the gauge itself and the wood instrument cluster.  During disassembly, it broke.  I glued it back together with superglue & it worked out OK.
The plastic bracket for the tachometer (on the left side of this picture) also broke in one place so it was also glued back together with super glue.  There's a wavy spring that keeps the plastic bracket in the correct place relative to the gauge itself.  This spring has quite a bit of tension on it when it's installed.  During removal of the spring, I allowed too much spring pressure to be placed on the plastic bracket & that's why it broke.  I needed to use a different technique of removing the spring (towards the face of the gauge) which would have lessened the pressure on the plastic bracket from the spring.  Now I know how to take it apart & put it back together properly...

Heavily modified early 914

Strange modification to the turn indicators...

Dash is basically gone & some sheet metal & roll bar in it's place...

Since the dash is gone, it clearly shows the steering linkage arrangement where the intermediate shaft goes to the centerline of the car where the input shaft of the steering rack is located.  The rack is basically the same as on a 911 which also had a central input shaft (good for making RHD versions of the car, as well as the rack being easy to use on a single seater race car...

The flares are similar to the factory flares used in the racing version of the early 914 & 914-6, as raced by the factory (at Le Mans, for example...)

This car drew my attention because it was pretty dirty and looked like it was regularly driven.  This is better than the perfect shiny cars with no dirt at all...
