Smiths Temperature Gauge -- Part 2 -- Finished cleaning

Cleaned up pretty nice.

Stuff hung and spread out all over the garage...

Hung the Mallory coil here.

Campagnolo Pedal wrench.

Bicycle parts.

Sunday, March 6, 2022 -- PCC Swap Meet -- Part 2 - Shoe stretchers

I've used these types of shoe stretchers a long time ago when I worked in shoe repair.

They'll live in these boots in the garage for now.

Broken Mavic Ksyrium ES Spoke -- Part 2

The Mavic Ksyrium wheels/spokes use a unique spoke/nipple design which requires a unique tool to rotate the nipple.

Park Tools makes a good tool, which I bought when I had to replace a broken spoke several years ago.

As it happened the last time, the nipple tends to fall apart when trying to turn it.
It doesn't help that I turned it in the wrong direction!
The threads on the nipple are opposite to normal threads and need to be turned clockwise to loosen.

In this case, I don't think it mattered since the nipple wasn't bottomed out.  Turning it either way won't in and of itself break the nipple.
If the nipple was not corroded and stuck, if I could have turned it in either direction to get it to loosen from the corrosion, I could have gotten it out.
The corrosion is too much for the aluminum nipple to handle the torque required to loosen the stuck threads.

The aluminum nipple corrodes to the aluminum wheel rim and takes a lot of torque to turn.
The nipple is not strong enough to handle the torque and basically falls apart when trying to turn.

Used a gripping plier to turn the spoke center in the nipple.

This worked and now the broken off spoke turns in the nipple.

Able to push the broken spoke down through the center of the nipple.

Need to remove the tire, tube and the rim tape to remove the broken spoke tip from the inside of the rim.

Comparison of the broken spoke to the spares (too short).

Ordered a replacement spoke online.
It's the right design but the wrong color (silver instead of black).
I can live with the color difference since there's already a different color spoke on both wheels by design (one spoke is red).
Will have to wait for the replacement to arrive.

Meanwhile, I can try to get the broken spoke tip and the nipple off of the rim in preparation for the new spoke.

Friday, March 4, 2022 -- Manhattan Beach Pier - Windy and Cold

Saw this interesting micro RV in the parking lot.

It appears to use a GM Astro-minivan as the basis.
I think it said "Tioga" on one of the mud-flaps.
I see an A/C unit on the roof.
Extending awning on the side.
Sleeping space at the top (over the cab).
May even have a bathroom...
