City Tree Trimming - Magnolia in front of the house

This is after the trimming -- They took off a lot from the tree, especially over the driveway (tree used to overhang the driveway).

Manhattan Beach Pier -- August 27, 2020 (Thursday) -- Nice at the beach (not too hot)... Nearly crashed...

I almost crashed when I got near the pier.

I went off the right edge of the bike path (not sure what happened) and into the sand, which would have been OK, except there was a patch of concrete on the side and I hit the edge of the concrete (perpendicularly) at a fairly high speed (about 25 MPH).  

I usually "sprint" a little bit as I come to the pier & I may have overdone it, causing the bike to drift to the right.  The bike path is fairly narrow (I would guess about 4 feet wide) so usually you're one or two feet from the right edge.  Generally, I ride towards the right side of the path, in case someone comes up from behind me and wants to pass, it allows them more room.  

The front time had dropped into the sand for a few feet before hitting the concrete edge... (bad luck that there was a side concrete patch, right where I went into the sand...)

It was quite an impact.

I managed to maintain control and come to a stop in the sand (stayed upright!).

It's amazing how much of a "braking" effect the sand has on a bike.

Going into the sand is like putting on the brakes pretty hard...

I thought the front tire may have punctured or the wheel damaged (broken spoke?  bend rim?), such was the impact on the front tire/wheel.

But, upon examination, nothing appeared to be damaged.

My water bottle flew out of it's holder at the impact.  Someone riding behind me picked it up and brought it to me, where I had stopped.  That was nice of the person...

When I got on the sand & the impact happened, the momentum of my body going forward made the LH brake lever assembly, where my hand was resting, slide down the handle bar about 1/2 inch, such was the intensity of the impact!

I was able to "slam" the lever back to it's normal position, using my hand as a hammer.

Was able to ride back home & the bike worked OK.

Will check the lever before riding the bike again...

It's finally cooler today.  About 75 F at home and around 70 F at the beach.

Back to the usual wind conditions...

Looks like they're taking down/away the outdoor seating on the street?

A little socked-in (Hermosa pier looks hazy...), which is nice.

I arrived at the "hang glider spot" just as they took off from the top.  I just missed them in the picture.  I thought they might catch the wind and come up but they never did.
I think it was too little wind.  On most days, there's enough wind to take them up...  On some days, it's too windy and would be dangerous to try it...

Spare wheels for gravel tires

I was looking to fit some gravel tires on some spare wheels for S's bike (I have 4 or five sets of spare road wheels).  Unfortunately, I don't have any with an 8-speed cassette (Shimano), which is what's on her bike.

She took gravel the tires with her bike so  that they can be swapped in, if she really wants to.

The smooth tires currently on her bike are 32 mm wide.  The WTB gravel tires are 37 mm.  Tire clearance looked OK to go up to 37...
