Garage door hinge repair -- RH Bay, Left side door

There are three hinges per door.  These are the two upper hinges for the right hand bay, left door.
Only the middle hinge is really doing any work right now.  The upper hinge is completely loose (all five screws have come loose) and the bottom hinge is completely detached from the frame and missing the screws...

All five of these old wood screws are loose and backed out.  The wood in the screw holes have deteriorated and the repeated stress has made them back out...

The five screws came out easily because they're loose.  They're #14 screws and appear to be about 1.5" long.  Will replace with 3" long screws.  There's some structure behind the door jamb so a longer screw has something to bite into.

Middle hinge screws.  They're mostly still relatively tight but would also benefit from the longer screws.

The bottom hinge door jamb wood has rotted away towards the bottom of where the hinge attaches.  Since this is the hinge with the least amount of stress on it, for now I'll just install the longer screws.  The old screws are gone!  (wonder when and where they went...).

The house/garage are 91 years old.  These screws have been "working" for a long time.  I guess it's not too surprising that they need some work...

Got these #14 x 3.5" screws from the local Ace hardware store (15 of them).

The original screw appears to be close to a #14 but slightly thicker.  (#16 is the next size up but it's much beefier and would not even fit through the holes in the hinge...)

The head on the new screws are slightly smaller (& Phillips instead of flat)

Maybe about 1.5 mm smaller head.  It's good for sitting flush to the hinge.

Because the screw is so long, I need an extra long drill bit to pre-drill the existing holes to accommodate the much longer screws.  I happen to have this extra long drill bit with an adjustable stop (with a spring loaded tapered head).  I adjusted it so that the hole will be drilled almost all the way for the new screws except for the last 1/4" or so.  I would like the screw to really bite into the last 360 degree turn.  I'll drill the first hole & see if it goes it tight or not...

The last 1/4" of the drill bit is narrower (like a pilot section before the full diameter of the drill bit...).

Top hinge.  All the screws went in tight (the drill bit and hole depth was just right).

Prior to putting all the screws in the top hinge, the door was shimmed up off the ground so that once the hinges are tight, the door won't drag on the ground.

This is the middle hinge.  Cleaned the paint out of one of the screws & removed it.  This screw was loose.

Replaced the one screw with the new longer screw.  It went in nice and tight.  Will replace the other four screws too.

All the screws were replaced on the middle hinge & they all went in nice and tight.

Installed one new long screw on the bottom hinge.  It also went in nice and tight.  Will install the other four screws to stabilize this hinge.  It doesn't really see any stress.  The top hing sees the most stress followed by the middle hinge.  This bottom hinge is more of a locator than load bearing...

Could only put three of the five screws in.  The three went in tight but the wood behind the bottom two screw holes is too damaged to hold the new screws.  This will still work & may even last another 90 years...

Garage Organizing - part 36 -- Vintage Craftsman Circular Saw Storage Case

Just a case, no saw.  Could use a little cleaning...

After removing the large lid, the case base has this removable shelf that allows access to the shallow storage space under it.
The entire case is made of steel (no plastic anywhere).

This stuff came with the case (but the saw did not come with it when I bought the case, as is...).

A "nail cutting" blade & some instructions.

Also came with these tools and a Craftsman saw lubricant...

I have a dado set that was being stored in the rafters of the garage.  Took it down and put it in the case.  There's a stud and wingnut built into the base of the case for storing a dado set.  My set is too thick to fit on the stud so a few of the internal cutters are stored off the stud.  The dado set was made for a company based in Los Angeles (!).

Have not heard of "Advance Saw Works"...

Friday, May 22, 2020 -- Marina Del Rey -- Fastest ride in a while...

Went for a ride at lunch time.  The weather is beautiful...

It's been a while since I averaged over 20 MPH on this ride (26 minutes of riding time).  One factor is that the winds were not too bad...

Garage Organizing - part 35 -- The LH End Lower Cabinet Drawers

Actually, this is the drawer over the LH most lower cabinet (which makes it the second unit from the LH end of the rear counter).

This is the top drawer of the LH end lower unit (it has three drawers.).  This is the shallow drawer...

This is the middle drawer (mostly tape & some sand paper and painting supplies...).  Forgot to take a picture of the bottom drawer...

squirrely business

This tree ("strawberry" tree -- it can be a bush or a tree...) is just outside the kitchen window.  First time I've see a squirrel on this small branch...

It started making a call...

I'm guessing it's a mating call.  I don't think I've ever seen or heard a squirrel do this before.  It was repeatedly rubbing it's belly against the branch and making a call/noise.

After a few minutes, another squirrel appeared and started climbing the tree, at which point this squirrel chased after it and they both ran up the big sugar maple tree on the other side of the front yard...

Garage Organizing - part 34 -- The current state - overview picture

This is looking into the garage through the door that is primarily used for ingress/egress.  It looks pretty messy because all the horizontal surfaces are covered with stuff that I will be finding places for.  Some will find places in the cabinets/drawers and some will go into clear storage bins.  Nearly everything that needs to be "put away" is now in the garage.  All the stuff that was temporarily lying outside is now inside...

It's like any project, some obvious & more noticeable stuff can be done fairly quickly, but the small details can take much longer.  I've pretty much done all the bigger organizing stuff that I can.  Now on is the more difficult smaller stuff...

Thursday, May 21, 2020 -- Marina Del Rey -- Celebration on water...

People are riding their bikes on the bike path that's supposed to be closed still.  I don't understand why they are not opening the bike path, considering they have opened many hiking paths in the hills/mountains...

A little hard to see in the picture (middle, in the bottom half...), but there's a seal swimming back out the Ballona Creek channel.

There's a party on this big boat with a Mariachi band playing & a big sign on the top deck that says "Class of 2020."

It's just floating in the channel... (not going in or out)

It's a big band (looks like a dozen or so musicians...)

Garage Organizing - part 33 -- Combined two piles outside into one...

Stuff being stored in the wood side-board/cabinet temprarily...

The tool box and tank will end up inside the garage.  The rest will stay in the pile for now until I figure out what I'm going to do with the stuff...

There's two large tarps (from Costco) on top of the pile to keep moisture off.  The tarps are weighted down, so that they don't blow off.

The three large "furniture" type of items (Italian drafting table, side cabinet & "icebox" cabinet, will go to my gardener.  He'll come pick them up in a couple of weeks...
