Sunday, February 27, 2022 -- Driving Museum model car swap -- Part 11 -- 1978 Chevy Chevette

It might have been around the late 70s, when my dad's friend, Watanabe-san, bought one of these.
I thought he was crazy!
It's such a crappy car.
Piece of junk, even when new.
There were much better Toyotas, Hondas, even Fiats & Renaults were probably better!
I didn't understand why he bought this thing.

Many years later, I have a theory on why he bought it.
Watanabe-san went through the Japanese interment camp (prison) ordeal during WWII.
The Japanese-Americans were questioned at to their loyalty to American and even had to sign a document pledging such allegiance (no other Americans had to do this).

My guess is that he probably decided to always show who's side he was on & probably decided to not buy Japanese over American.

I can't imagine the trauma/pain he must have felt, being jailed for several years for no reason other than pure prejudice by the American government/people.
