Thursday, December 31, 2020 -- Butterfly Trail, Simi Valley -- Part 4

Saturday, January 2, 2021 -- Swapping chains on the bike...

I've had the Ultegra chain soaking in the cleaner for quite a few days...

The chain looks pretty clean...

Used the repair stand to make the chain swap easier.

The DLC chain has a lot of sand on it.
Took off the chain and put it in the same cleaning solution jar to soak for awhile.
Used compressed air to blow off the sand from the derailleur & gears.
Installed the cleaned chain and applied "dry" lube on it.
The bike is ready to go again.

Dining table bench - part 9 -- Finish removing the material from the board for the butterfly & install...

Start by chiseling to the inside of the pencil line on one side of the butterfly relief.

One side has been cut.

The butterfly seems to fit on the one side...

First check if the line on the other side is still accurate.
In this case, it's pretty close.
Cut the other side to fit...

About 75% of the shape has been cut and the fit is checked.
One end of the butterfly seems to fit well.

Finished cutting the rest of the shape and fine tune the cutout to make the butterfly fit tightly all around.
In this picture, the butterfly is about 1/16" pushed into the hole all around.
The fit is pretty tight.

Did a little more fine tuning and pushed the butterfly about 1/3 of the way in (drew a white line) and the fit seems good.

On the bottom side of the butterfly, sanded a chamfer all around to make the butterfly go more easily down and also to not interfere at the corners.

Glue applied.

Used a wooden hammer and a piece of wood to drive the butterfly all the way down.

Cleaned off the excess glue (the dark water staining will go away once the water dries).

The butterfly is about 1 to 1.5 mm over flush.
Will plane/sand it down next... (once the glue has dried overnight)

December 31, 2020 -- New Year's Eve

Dutch friends came by dropped off some "oliebollen" (Dutch apple donuts).
Usually, we get together for New Year's Eve at their house and they make the oliebollen just before midnight.
Not this year...

Sprinkle some powdered sugar before eating...
Very tasty.

2,000 piece puzzle...

Tuesday, December 29, 2020 -- Marina Del Rey Bike Path Bridge...

Super Clear day...

The flag at the breakwater is under strain...

Snow on the mountains...

The snow line appears to be pretty low... (3,000 feet?)

Dining table bench - part 8 -- removing the material from the board for the butterfly

Will use the router to take out most of the butterfly joint area of the board.

Will use a 1/4" straight cutter.
It's interesting that this set is made in Italy...

Set the depth of cut to be just a little bit shallower than the height of the butterfly.

Done with the router.
Cutting into or over the line would be a disaster!
Was able to not get too close to the line.

The rest of the wood removal will be done with chisels.
