Sunday, April 6, 2025 -- Small bathroom sink leak

The pipe under the pedestal sink in the small bathroom started leaking.

The sink drain top trim piece is broken on the threads.

Removed the pipe just under the sink.
It's pretty corroded.

Also had to remove the trap to get the pipe under the sink out.

The stopper mechanism pieces are also pretty corroded.

There's a space between the inner and outer surfaces of the sink to allow the overflow water to escape.

Replacement hardware.

Removed the corroded stopper hardware.
Will throw it out.

Using plumber's puddy at the top stopper trim.

Put all the pieces together and installed it and it leaks...

Didn't apply teflon tape at all the arrow points.
Need to apply the tape...
Teflon tape.
In the picture above, I didn't put enough at the most right location.
Had to do it again...
Not enough tape here.
All the possible places where it can leak if not properly sealed or put together.
When I didn't first put teflon tape at locations 1, 2, 4 & 5, they leaked.
The pedestal base is a ceramic piece and has a tight fit with the sink in place.  while taking it in and out multiple times, I cracked it near the top!

I used some white colored 2-part marine epoxy to glue the broken piece back on.
After applying the 2-part epoxy.
After cleaning up the excess & letting it set for 24 hours.
Since the area that broke is directly under the bottom of the sink, it's really not visible.
Put plenty of teflon tape at all the threaded joints.
To ensure the right gap to the top trim piece, I placed the thin flat rubber washer under the conical washer to increase the gap to the nut.
After all the new hardware was put in place and leak tested.
I wanted to replace the rusty escutcheon against the wall but didn't want to create a new problem.  I think the small 90 degree piece that has to come off first to get the escutcheon off is glued in place.
I would have to cut it off and that would cause the geometry to be off when it was put back together with a new 90 degree elbow.
If I extend the straight pipe from the wall, it would cause the elbow to be too far away from the wall.
I'm sure I could figure out an extension and elbow combination and length that could make it work but it's not worth it.  The rusty piece is not visible when you're standing in the bathroom and is mostly behind the pedestal.
Why they would use such a poor quality piece in the first place is so short sighted.  I would have paid $20 more up front for a quality solid brass piece so that it would never need replacing...
There's two lag screws that hold the sink to the wall.
They were a bit loose, so tightened them both.

The repair took 3 days (due to the cracked base and a couple of trips to the hardware store)
