There was quite a bit of dirt and debris inside the box. Probably accumulated over 60 to 70 years...
Once the drawers are put back in, the inside will probably not be seen again for another 60 or 70 years (I'll be long gone by then...). Need to straighten the bent front lip. It's pretty badly bent... |
Clamped a plate to the flange to be a support for hammering the metal straight. Nearly there... |
This is as close as I can get with the metal backing. To get it the rest of the way, I took off the metal support and free hammered it to be straight (no support). |
This is kinda sighting down the flange. It's pretty close to straight and good enough. |
Another view of the flange. It looks pretty good. |
The paint on the top was pretty messed up and flaking off. Decided to just remove it all using a scraper. Came off pretty easily... |
Also took the lock apart to reorient it so that straight up is the locked position. |
The front "door" or lid was also bent on the RH corner. This also got straightened. It's pretty straight now. All the box straightening is done now I think... |
