Replacing the handlebar grips on T's bike...

The grips are sticky & need to be replaced. (I'm guessing that the material has degraded from exposure to the environment and the chemicals from the hands.)

The handlebars (carbon fiber) are about 0.875" diameter (a little over 22.2 mm).

Also measured the length of the grips on the handlebars.

It measures about 4.825" (about 122.5 mm).

I happen to have these orange foam grips already.

They're the correct size so I put them on for now.

First, I don't think they'll last very long (pretty soft/spongy foam).

And, T will probably not want them on there too long because of the color.

But for now, the bike can be ridden without getting all grossed out by the sticky grips! (very unpleasant to touch)

Garage -- Hanging Bikes in the Corner...

This is the "before" picture.

There used to be one bike hanging in the left rear corner of the garage (near the book cases).

Now there are three bikes hanging in the corner (closely spaced together but not touching).

Used these simple hooks (the larger yellow one in this picture) to hang the bikes.

 

Saturday, January 16, 2021 -- Manhattan Beach Pier - Another Hot day... Very Crowded...

 

Dining table bench - part 24 -- Legs - Both legs are assembled - Need to match to the bottom of the board...

The second leg has set overnight.

Temporarily placed the legs under the slab to check the fit.

The bottom of the board is not flat.

Will scribe a line on the leg to match the shape of the board.

Sharpened the pencil in the compass.

I had bought these compasses (Vemco brand), along with triangles and other drafting tools when I started working at GM in 1990.

Although CAD was coming into wider use, for the type of one-off concept work we were doing, the manual method was faster.

I had not learned drafting before the GM job.

Learned "on the job."

The work can be quite satisfying, although tedious...

After scribing the lines, used a blue colored pencil to make the line more prominent.

Will cut these irregular lines on the band saw...

 

Two long boards that could be used to make a bench?

There's a story behind these boards (maple) & why they have all the holes in them...

For another time when they get used for something...

There's a little bit of water/mold damage on one end of the boards...

Look Carbon Wheels -- Cleaning the front wheel before putting it away...

I had used these spare wheels when my primary wheels were out of commission during the rear cassette replacement work.

They got pretty dirty in just a few days (maybe 10?) of use...

The end of the hub was rusting (brown/red rust -- steel).

I applied some rust converter (basically petroleum jelly...) on the rust and let it sit overnight.

The chemical reaction makes the rust turns this dark color.

Will use some abrasive-pad/steel-wool to take off the rust next...

The hub is also made by LOOK

Started cleaning with steel wool.

Much better...

Looked like 6 ~ 8 ft.

Not too much wind & warm (low 70s at the beach at low 80s at home).
