Tuesday, December 31, 2024 - Museo Anahuacalli (founded & designed by Diego Rivera)

Took an Uber after breakfast to this museum about 25 minutes away.
It was started & designed by the famous muralist Diego Rivera (saw some of his work in Detroit when I lived there).  He was married to Frida Kahlo (artist/painter).
A person at the museum said that this project was unfinished until recently when about 10 years ago, it was finished and artist spaces/classes were added.

The person at the museum ticket counter tried hard to give a discount to anyone who was entering.
She asked if we fit any of the categories that will get you a discount (such as a person who lived in certain areas, teacher, student).  She asked if we're 60 or older, which we are.  Then, she gave us the senior discount.  I'm not sure that I wanted it...

It's very dark inside.
The building is made of lava rocks so it's dark and has a rough texture.

Most of the artifacts are pre-Spanish.

The museum had a temporary exhibit related to disarmament.
This large room has several sketches by Diego Rivera.
None of them appear to be finished pieces.

A self portrait.

The piece with some color in it has some similar features to a very large mural we later saw at another museum.

Most of Diego Rivera works have a story/message.
He was the founder of the Communist party in Mexico and was not afraid to make a statement in his work.
A little sketch book that Diego Rivera used to jot down ideas.

Most of the rooms had stone/tile art on the ceilings.

Not sure what this is.
It's pretty highly polished and carved.
The color of the stone had some green in it.  I found it very attractive.

These stone stools were there to be used.
I sat on it.  Pretty nice.
I think they're very heavy!
These would be really nice in a garden.

This other room had a couple of these stone chairs in front of a screen playing a video related to arms and disarmament.
I sat on this too.
The back stone was pretty uncomfortable.
The mushroom shaped stools were much better to sit on.

This stone stool looking thing was near the entrance.
I though it was something you can sit on.
There were a couple of people working there who looked at me and shook their heads.
Can't sit on it...

Next to the museum, are several low building that look like classrooms or art studios.
The buildings are very nicely designed and built.
Pretty modern design and materials.

They had a small store with some pretty nice stuff in it.
CM bought something for both kids.

Because it was new year's eve, the museum closed a bit early at 3 PM.  We were ready to leave around 2:30...
