Tuesday, August 13, 2024 - Kauai - Kalakoa Gallery & Kama-aina Koa Wood Workshop

There was a sign for the Koa Wood Workshop but there was no "store."
There was a side gate where the sign pointed to, so I opened the gate and walked in.
It turned out that it's a wood shop that does custom work making furniture and fittings (like doors) for high end homes.
The young guy who owned & ran the shop said that he recently bought the business and property.
His wife had opened a gallery in the front of the building and he and one guy worked in the shop.
He was also improving the building (new roof, some new structure, etc.).

The shop is not open to the public but the guy took a few minutes to talk and share his story, which I appreciated and enjoyed.

He was working some custom doors for a house.
They're beautiful and very heavy!

It's a large shop with a lot of woodworking machinery.
The guy in the back has been working in the shop for nearly 40 years.
He's the only one left.
There used to be seven people at one point in the past.

Some of the wood stock.
A lot of native woods from all the main Hawaiian islands.

The gallery was very nice with some interesting art and craft.

The young woman (the young woodshop guy's wife) was very nice and easy to talk to.
They've only been running the gallery and shop for less than a year.
She said that business is doing OK (selling some of the items, including the painted surfboard in the middle).
She said that there's no public restrooms in town and that if I wanted to use hers later, I was welcome to.

We went to Bobbie's restaurant a couple of doors down for lunch and went back to the gallery to use her restroom.
She was very nice and gracious.
I wanted to buy something small from the gallery but there wasn't anything really small.
